Alan Bock has been my friend since 1969, and a committed promoter and defender of individual freedom.
I have been informed that he has passed away. The Orange County Register has published a tribute to Alan that expresses many of my own thoughts. Please go to: http://www.ocregister.com/opinion/bock-301133-alan-liberty.html

Alan Bock promoted freedom through a long career of writing the arguments for freedom, in obscure publications and small circulation pamphlets in the early years, and for many years as a columnist for the Orange County Register and a columnist in the last few years for www.antiwar.com

You can view an archive of his columns for antiwar.com @ http://original.antiwar.com/author/bock/

He and his voice for freedom will be missed.

At a general meeting on February 10, 2011 the Riverside County Committee of The Libertarian Party adopted the following resolution:

In California the cost of government programs has outgrown the ability and willingness of the people to pay for them. Year after year, the Sacramento politicians resort to accounting tricks, illicit borrowing and ‘temporary’ tax hikes to create the illusion of a balanced budget.

Governor Jerry Brown’s call for 12.5 billion dollars in spending cuts may point to a change in direction. Libertarians applaud Governor Brown’s call to close down all of the more than 425 community redevelopment agencies in California.

Redevelopment agencies have stood in the way of natural economic growth, rewarding favored developers with taxpayer funded subsidies.

The Riverside County Libertarian Party supports an end to community redevelopment agencies in California and we endorse Governor Brown’s proposal to bring this about.

“Pioneers of American Freedom: Origin of Liberal and Radical Thought in America is a book by the German anarcho-syndicalist Rudolf Rocker about the history of liberal, libertarian, and anarchist thought in the United States.”

“Rudolf Rocker, who had been strongly influenced by Benjamin Tucker, started work on Pioneers of American Freedom during World War II. Professor Arthur E. Briggs started translating the book into English from Rocker’s native German in 1941. He took over for Rocker’s previous English translator Ray E. Chase as he had died. The book was published with the help of the Rocker Publishing Committee in 1949.”

“The first part of the book consists of a series of essays on the American liberal thinkers Thomas Paine, Thomas Jefferson, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, William Lloyd Garrison, Wendell Phillips, and Abraham Lincoln. Rocker emphasizes the importance these men assign to individualism, freedom, and the subordination of the state to the welfare of the individual. This, Rocker claims, is a great similarity between anarchist and liberal thought.”

“In 1999, a year after winning a second and final term as Republican governor of New Mexico, Gary Johnson became the most prominent politician in the United States to call for legalizing marijuana. He also said straightforwardly that he had used pot himself in the past….”

“In 2010 Johnson is hoping to gain notoriety for a different, though related, reason. At a time of deep and convulsive popular discontent with the economy and the politicians attempting to manage it, Johnson has launched a profile-raising 501(c)4 nonprofit organization called the Our America Initiative, pushing limited-government solutions to economic, environmental, social, and international issues.”
