Who’s To Blame for the Massive Deficit?

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

“The temporary increase in the national debt ceiling approved this month — combined with the prospect of a huge trillion-dollar-plus increase early next year — has once again prompted criticisms of President Obama for runaway spending and record deficits.”

“All this borrowing is only necessary, we are told, because Obama ran up $1.4 trillion of debt in his first year.”

“It’s true that the White House is pushing big spending items, not least of which is his multitrillion-dollar scheme for government-run health care. But many critics, either out of ignorance or malice, are blaming Obama for deficits that are not his fault.”

Some Republicans, for instance, complain that Obama tripled the budget deficit in his first year. This assertion is understandable,

It’s the End of 2009. Where Are Our Troops?

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

“This is not the change we hoped for. President Obama rose to power on the basis of his early opposition to the Iraq war and his promise to end it. But after a year in the White House he has made both of George Bush’s wars his wars.”

“Speaking of Iraq in February 2008, candidate Barack Obama said, “I opposed this war in 2002. I will bring this war to an end in 2009. It is time to bring our troops home.” The following month, under fire from Hillary Clinton, he reiterated, ”I was opposed to this war in 2002….I have been against it in 2002, 2003, 2004, 5, 6, 7, 8 and I will bring this war to an end in 2009. So don’t be confused.” ”

“Indeed, in his famous “the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow” speech on the night he clinched the Democratic nomination, he also proclaimed, “I am absolutely certain that generations from now we will be able to look back and tell our children that . . . this was the moment when we ended a war.” ”

Markets, Not Mandates

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

“While congressional reform efforts screech and shudder along, let’s take a moment to dream about real health care reform. Imagine a system that is genuinely transparent, competitive, and driven by consumers.”

“Right now, thanks to incentives built into the tax code, patients are locked into the health plans their employers choose. Consequently, most of us don’t have a clue what our health insurance and health care cost. We have no way to reduce those costs and no incentive to do so even if we could. Worse yet, it’s precisely when you need the system the most that it fails you. In the words of the Princeton economist Uwe Reinhardt, “when you’re down on your luck, you’re unemployed, you lose your insurance.…Only the devil could ever have invented such a system.” ”

Who Wants More War?

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

“If anyone still doubted that this administration’s foreign policy would bring any kind of change, this week’s debate on Afghanistan should remove all doubt. The president’s stated justifications for sending more troops to Afghanistan and escalating the war amount to little more than recycling all the false reasons we began the conflict. It is so discouraging to see this coming from our new leadership, when the people were hoping for peace. New polls show that 49 percent of the people favor minding our own business on the world stage, up from 30 percent in 2002. Perpetual war is not solving anything. Indeed continually seeking out monsters to destroy abroad only threatens our security here at home as international resentment against us builds. The people understand this and are becoming increasingly frustrated at not being heard by the decision-makers. The leaders say some things the people want to hear, but change never comes.”

Limos and Private Jets for Climate Dignitaries

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

“As self-described “world leaders” gather in Copenhagen to lecture the Earth’s population about carbon-dioxide (plant food) emissions, international news reports have revealed that the COP15 Climate Summit ringleaders are arriving in the Danish capital on hundreds of carbon-spewing private jets and riding around in more than 1,200 gas-guzzling limousines once there.”

“Copenhagen’s international airport reported that just during the peak period of the climate-change summit, it is expecting almost 150 private jets — so many luxury planes, in fact, that they will have to fly to other nearby airports to wait for their passengers after dropping them off in Copenhagen. Ironically, one of the main talking points right now is the imposition of high global taxes on air travel,..”

Stasi Spy Revelations Rock German State

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

Germany’s recent elections saw a big drop in vote for the Social Democrats, and the emergence of The Left Party as a growing force of ex-Communists and left Socialists. In Brandenburg, the Social Democrats and the Left Party have formed a coalition government.

Now the coalition is rocked by revelations that many Left Party members of the state parliament were informers for East Germany’s secret police – the Stasi. Spiegel reports on the scandal @ http://www.spiegel.de/international/germany/0,1518,665059,00.html

Al-Qaida Kills Eight Times More Muslims Than Non-Muslims

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

“Few would deny that Muslims too are victims of Islamist terror. But a new study by the Combating Terrorism Center in the US has shown that an overwhelming majority of al-Qaida victims are, in fact, co-religionists.”

“In the battle against unbelievers, can one also kill Muslims? Even the terror network al-Qaida is troubled by this question.”

Libertarians opposed to new war plans for Afghanistan

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

The Libertarian Party (LP) today expressed its opposition to the Afghanistan war plans announced by President Barack Obama last night.

Wes Benedict, Executive Director of the LP, said, “Rush Limbaugh should buy Obama a nice cigar. The liberal president has done exactly what the conservative leader wanted: escalate the war.”

William Redpath, Chairman of the Libertarian National Committee (LNC), commented, “This is further evidence that the differences between Republicans and Democrats are, at most, rhetorical. This president, whose votes made him the most liberal member of the U.S. Senate, has just announced an escalation of a foreign war. His campaign promise of ‘Change’ now sounds a lot more hollow.”

Time to Wind Down the War on Drugs

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

“Today, more and more Americans are open to winding down our destructive war on drugs.”

“In October, Gallup recorded its highest-ever level of public support for marijuana legalization, with 44 percent of Americans in favor. There’s “a generational rift” on the issue, Gallup reports: A majority of voters under 50 back legalization.”

“This Election Day, Maine joined a growing number of states that have legalized medical marijuana dispensaries. Meanwhile, California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has called for a “robust debate” on the issue, and activists are on pace to put a marijuana decriminalization initiative in front of the state’s voters.”
