States Plan on Opting Out of Obamacare

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

“Some state lawmakers, in preemptive mode, are considering ballot initiatives for the 2010 election which would allow them to opt out of Obama care, if the voters so choose.”

“The states of Indiana, Minnesota, New Mexico, North Dakota, and Wyoming are all proposing some sort of legislation to unshackle themselves from what some describe as a trampling of state’s rights by the federal government’s passage of the healthcare reform package.”

“Arizona has already passed legislation entitled the Health Care Freedom Act that allows the ballot initiation to appear in 2010…”

International Bailout Brings Us Closer to Economic Collapse

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

“Last week Congress passed the war supplemental appropriations bill.   In an affront to all those who thought they voted for a peace candidate, the current president will be sending another $106 billion we don’t have to continue the bloodshed in Afghanistan and Iraq, without a hint of a plan to bring our troops home.”

“Many of my colleagues who voted with me as I opposed every war supplemental request under the previous administration seem to have changed their tune.  I maintain that a vote to fund the war is a vote in favor of the war. Congress exercises its constitutional prerogatives through the power of the purse, and as long as Congress continues to enable these dangerous interventions abroad, there is no end in sight, that is until we face total economic collapse.”

Libertarians urge “no” vote on $1.9 trillion Waxman-Markey tax hike

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

America’s third largest party urged the U.S. House Tuesday to defeat plans for a $1.9 trillion energy tax hike over eight years.  House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is attempting to rush H.R. 2454, the Waxman-Markey energy tax bill, to a vote this week.

“With unemployment rising above and beyond what President Obama said it would be with the multi-hundred billion dollar stimulus bill, now is not the time to dismantle our economy with a multi-hundred billion dollar energy tax hike,” said William Redpath.

“Libertarians urge House members to defeat this job-killing tax hike on Americans,”

The Myth of Financial Deregulation

Friday, June 19th, 2009

“For the past nine months, Wall Street critics have painted a damning picture of the housing bubble as the product of deregulation and reduced governmental oversight. To read the Obama administration’s new financial sector regulation overhaul proposal, the government didn’t have anything to do with the current crisis. According to this view, our economy wouldn’t be facing a recession with almost 10 percent unemployment if the government had been more involved with the market. This picture is about as historically accurate as the famous portrait Washington Crossing the Delaware. “…

“The core problem of the regulatory proposal is its view of the causes of the crisis. Everything is built on a belief that the market failed and that deregulation created a system of excessive risk and irresponsibility. Ironically, it was government action that created incentives for financial firms to be less risk adverse, not a lack of regulation. As Washington prepares to debate regulatory overhaul this summer, it is more important than ever to wrestle the myth of deregulation to the ground.”

Snake Oil For Our Health Care Ills

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009

“President George W. Bush concocted the connection between al-Qaida and Saddam Hussein to justify the Iraq invasion. Now President Barack Obama is concocting an equally fantastical theory to justify a de facto government takeover of health care.”

“He is claiming that the way to slash health care costs and achieve universal coverage is by creating a Medicare-style government insurance plan that is open to everyone. In the world that Obama and other universal health care advocates inhabit, Medicare allegedly has done a far superior job than private plans of keeping a lid on rising medical costs. Forcing these plans to compete with a plan modeled after it will–in Obama’s words–”keep them honest and keep prices down.” ”

“But before demanding honesty from others, Obama will have to show some himself, especially concerning the performance of Medicare.”

Proposed government takeover of health care means higher costs, less effective care and rationing

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009

Libertarian National Committee Chairman William Redpath issued the following statement Tuesday in response to President Obama’s address to the American Medical Association:

“There is no question our health care system is broken and in need of serious reform.  Americans deserve health care that is affordable, effective and universally available.  However, President Obama’s $1 trillion government takeover of hospitals and doctor’s offices is not the answer.

The Obama plan makes health care more expensive, less effective and less accessible through rationing and bureaucratic inefficiency.  The fact is government-run health care systems are more expensive and less effective than systems run by doctors and health care professionals.

Government Begets More Government

Monday, June 15th, 2009

“Since the Panic of 2008 reached its climax in September of that year, the U.S. government has done many things to further devastate the economy — the partial nationalization of financial institutions, which prompted Hugo Chavez to declare that “Bush is to the left of me now,” the bailout of AIG, the $787 billion stimulus package, the public-private investment program, and the government takeover of General Motors and Chrysler. More troubling than the endless bailouts and stimulus packages (which are already terrible in that they create even more misallocation of resources and worsen the fundamentals of the economy) is the expansion of government control over businesses that accepted bailout funds. Using the fact that these businesses received taxpayer dollars as an excuse, the U.S. government stepped up its interventionist economic policy to the detriment of property rights and the rule of law.”

GM, Amtrak and an Increasingly Fascist America

Friday, June 12th, 2009

“Last week, General Motors finally declared bankruptcy. Many in government thought $20 billion in taxpayer dollars would save the company, but as predicted, it only postponed the inevitable. The government will dump another $30 billion into GM and take a 60 percent controlling interest for it. Public officials are now involving themselves in tactical business decisions such as where GM’s headquarters should move and what kind of cars it will build.”

“The promise that this is temporary and will eventually be profitable is supposed to ease the American people into accepting this arrangement, but it is of little comfort to those who remember similar promises when the American taxpayers bought Amtrak.”

Libertarians say “cancel stimulus spending”

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

America’s third largest party Wednesday called on Congress to terminate the remainder of stimulus spending citing new polling data showing a plurality of Americans now believe what Libertarians have said since January – Obama’s stimulus package is too big, too expensive and doesn’t help the economy.

“Despite a Jan. 10 White House report that the Obama spending explosion would keep unemployment under eight percent, it instead grew to 9.4 percent,” said William Redpath, Libertarian National Committee Chairman, citing both a January White House report selling the “stimulus” package, and new Labor Department statistics released last week placing unemployment at a 26-year-high, with 14.5 million workers now jobless.
